You’re probably thinking who the heck is Leo? Well it’s just the name of a popular German to English dictionary online. It was actually started by a man called Achim Jung, not Leo, in 1995 and the very essence of the dictionary was built with a small database with around 160,000 words. By the time it hit 2004, almost 410,000 entries were made symmetrically which is around 800,000 normal dictionary entries.
The online German dictionary broke its own records of 5 million online searches and grew to over to over 5.5 million searches from 2004 to 2005. So it picked up a whole heap of searches in 1 year which was amazing.
Leo German English Dictionary going Mobile
Now that Leo is popular it started a SMS service where you can SMS your word and it’ll SMS you’re a translation back to your mobile phone. This unique service was made to the public in 2003 and Leo teamed up with BurdaWireless GmbH. Now Leo German Dictionary was able to viewers of WAP enable devices or web browsing mobile phones.
Later in the year 2004 there was a handheld device that was developed.
What is dictQuery & Lion?
The dictQuery is what runs all the queries between the Leo German Dictionary website and the user. So each time a search is made dictQuery will start working. It was re-developed to include some added benefits which made the site more user friendly and easier to use.
