In Ranchi, Jharkhand all the Bengali people held demonstrations here demanding the second-language status for their mother tongue after the state government accorded that position to Urdu. A huge number of people of diverse associations of the Bengali community from different parts of the state demonstrated at the Albert Ekka roundabout here under banner of Jharkhand Bengali Association. Shubhash Moitra, a member of JBA says “Bengali is not only a national language, it is also an international language. It is the official language in Bangladesh, but in our country this language is not given its proper place.” A member of Jharkhand Bangbhasi Samit member, Mrigendra Biswas said: ‘The Madhu Koda government is playing vote bank politics. Bengali comes on second position in Jharkhand after Hindi (in terms of number of speakers), but Urdu was accorded the second-language status. We will teach a lesson to the people in power in the assembly and Lok Sabha elections.”

In a research on infants from eight to sixteen months, researchers found that watching baby DVDs or videos may actually delay vocabulary development. Dr Frederick J Zimmerman said “The take-home message for parents “is that you can’t purchase healthy development — it comes from frequent conversations between parent and child starting at birth and continuing at least for the first 3 years of life.” The researchers came to know that parents who read or told stories to their infants and kids at least once a day increased their child’s vocabulary scores on the CDI test. Dr. Victor C Strasburger in a commentary published with the study writes “with a myriad of unsubstantiated claims being made about how they will improve intelligence and school readiness.”

Dr. S. Jacob Scheinerman, a cardiac surgeon at the New Hyde Park hospital, referring to the drug Trasylol, said “We use it minimally at Long Island Jewish, There are other ways to do open heart surgery.” He also said that the hospital still has a supply of Trasylol and he would use it if the situation called for it. Bayer AG, at the request of U.S., German and Canadian health agencies, a German Drug Maker deliberately removed the medication from the market. Dr. Newell Robinson, a cardiac surgeon at St. Francis Hospital in Rosyln said that the hospital’s decision to limit the drug’s use followed a January 2006 study that found increased risks of kidney failure, stroke, heart attack or heart failure among those who took the drug compared with two other drugs and the name of these two are aminocaproic acid and tranexamic acid, both can be used to stop excessive bleeding. Dr. Tim Gardner, president-elect of the American Heart Association, said that Trasylol never has been adopted 100 percent by cardiac surgeons; there are really no other drugs like it. “It is highly effective in certain circumstances.”

Yahoo Korea has presented a Korean language satellite image and map searching service where the users are not required to install any additional programs. The two largest Korean portals have started their own map search services, in which they cover only South Korea. Do you know Yahoo is the first to localize the service into the Korean language on the Web? A huge number building, cities, mountains, streets and tourist spots all over the world are available in Korean and you can easily search these places only on Yahoo Korea’s Web site. Manager of Yahoo’s Korean map service, Choi Woo-il said “With globalization continuing, the map service is also expanding, we will provide the best map search service by linking it with our global network.” One good thing about Yahoo map service is that there is no need to install additional programs.

David Laws, the party’s children secretary, said: “We have always been regarded as one of the most incompetent nations in our ability to speak other languages. These figures suggest that our counterparts abroad have seen nothing yet.” John Cridland, the deputy director-general of the Confederation of British Industry, said: “At present too few young people are entering work with language skills.” Alan Smithers, the professor of education at Buckingham University, said children had been “spoiled” by the growth of English. Continuing his views he also said “English being a world language brings many benefits, but we are put at the severe disadvantage of not having an incentive to engage in another language.” The schools minister, Jim Knight, said: “Whilst we were encouraged by the increase in the number of pupils taking Spanish, we have been concerned for some time about the decline in language learning.”
